Every now and then I run across a product that’s just brilliant. This week, the “why didn’t I think of that” idea comes from VSSL, pronounced “vessel.”

Founded through Kickstarter campaigns, the company produces aluminum cylinder flashlights that do much, much more. Actually, the light is self-contained in the end cap, leaving the body of the tube for storage of other essential gear. The tubes are filled with round aluminum tins, each chock full of emergency, or sometimes recreational, supplies. Oh, the other end cap is modular too and you can choose an oil-filled compass, carabiner clip, or plain version.

Examples of the tin contents include: fishing tackle, medical kit, fire starting components, a wire saw, rope, blades, candles, and trail markers – just to name some of the options. You can buy a ready-to-go unit pre-packed, or mix and match your own based on your needs. If you’ve got your own ideas for gear, just get some of the empty tins and fill them yourself.

VSSL makes more of a "recreational" model too. it's a flask, complete with expandable cups inside.

The standard VSSL is two-inches in diameter and nine-inches long, so it’s small enough to fit easily in a day pack. Or, toss one in the trunk of your car. They’re weather resistant so your gear will stay dry.

All in all, a cool idea. Heck, one model even includes a tent.
