From the length of the trail (leg) of the carriage behind them, I /think/ that is a M101 105mm (4.1″) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M101_howitzer) howitzer, though it might also be a M1 155mm (6.1″) “Long Tom” — but with only one soldier holding it, I suspect the former (155mm shells weighed close to 80 lbs, 105mm howitzer shell closer to 35 lb).
Wow, my estimation skills are really poor! Thanks for the insight on this. Based on your best estimate, I suppose we’ll have to go with something along the lines of 410 caliber 🙂
