AR 15 Rifle - A Brief History & Historical Time Line

This article originally appeared at Ammoland. By Tom McHale USA –-(Ammoland.com)- According to the news media, an AR 15 Rifle is any gun that someone uses in the act of doing something bad. What is an AR-15 really? Technically speaking, AR-15 is a brand name, like Kleenex or Xerox. And, just as with Kleenex and […]

A 1919 Colt Model 1903

This article originally appeared at Ammoland. By Tom McHale USA –-(Ammoland.com)- Arguably, it was ahead of its time with features we still appreciate these days like melted carry contours, single-action design, hammerless design (sort of), and a grip safety. It’s a sharp looking gun and once you handle and fire one, you’ll dig it – […]

Colt Rises Again?

February 2, 2016 By Tom McHale Leave a Comment

Colt's new Lightweight Commander. This one is chambered in 9mm.

Based on the new Colt guns we saw at SHOT Show 2016, we might be seeing a Phoenix rise from the ashes. It’s no news that Colt has had its struggles over the past couple of years. Recently, the company announced its plan to move forward as a healthier entity. Based on I saw at […]

5 Great AR Rifles for Less Than $1,000

May 7, 2015 By Tom McHale 1 Comment

The AR rifles on this list are solid base models ready for gear and customization.

The great Obama AR-15 Sale of 2013 is over, sort of. Yes, fears about political shenanigans like green tip 5.56mm ammo bans and other nonsensical moves are driving sales, but we’ve moved on from the time when there were no AR-rifles of any type available on the shelves. In fact, as the market has chilled […]

The best looking rifle at the dance, BAR none.

What was the classiest looking gun at this week’s National Association of Sporting Goods Wholesalers conference? That’s easy. This photo, which doesn’t begin to do justice, is the new Ohio Ordnance Works Colt 1918 Self Loading Rifle. You might recognize it as a true World War I pattern Browning Automatic Rifle. Adventures With A .22 Silencer: The SilencerCo Sparrow

May 7, 2014 By Tom McHale Leave a Comment

The SilencerCo Sparrow 22 on a Smith & Wesson M&P 22.

There’s not much more fun in recreational shooting than a .22 with a Silencer. Note I said “silencer” instead of “suppressor.” While “suppressor” is a more technically accurate term, the original devices were named silencers. Maxim Silencers, in fact. Hiram Percy Maxim, not to be confused with his machine gun inventing dad, Hiram Stevens Maxim, […]

Why not hold a 3 Gun match in the middle of the night? It works for match sponsor Crimson Trace!

The Crimson Trace Midnight 3 Gun Invitational was a dual purpose event. The first two nights provided shooting industry media an opportunity to shoot the match before the pro 3 Gunners arrived for the Friday and Saturday night competition. Sponsoring vendors also set up demonstrations at the range during daylight hours to test out some […]

1858 Remington Bison

Continuing on with an excerpt from our new book, The Rookie’s Guide to Guns and Shooting, Handgun Edition… 1700’s American pioneers have great success with long, rifled-barrel flintlocks known as Ohio, Pennsylvania and Kentucky rifles. Meddling politicians influenced the design of the California Rifle around this time, but adoption was limited due to the fact […]
